President Louis Abinader will make a special effort to train our teachers over the next four years, advocating for a new model of excellence in the training and election of our teachers, which he calls the foundation of a good education system.
“This administration’s commitment to improving our education system is already bearing fruit and we will continue. Over the past four years, we have added new school facilities that allow us to serve a total of 65,000 students in a dignified and safe manner during an extended school day, and we have renovated more than 6,400 public schools at an investment of more than 118 million pesos,” the President stressed, speaking on education issues during his swearing-in speech for the 2024-2028 term.
He added that the greatest achievement was the improvement in initial education, from 3 to 5 years, stressing that when he came to the government, coverage at this level was 36%, and three years later, we managed to rise to 64%. Thousands of boys and girls from the humblest families of our country have joined it.
The Governor noted that we need educators who not only understand the subjects they teach, but also have the most effective ways to impart knowledge and connect with every student.
“A prepared teacher is a transformative teacher who has the power to sow the seeds of critical thinking, creativity and empathy in every child,” Abinader said during the National Assembly in the Carlos Piantini Hall of the National Theater.
He declared that the most important revolution and the biggest change we will see in the future will happen in classrooms around the world, and this revolution will come to our country too. “We will not be late, this time we will definitely be first.”
He pointed out that to this end he will continue to improve students’ conditions and increase the supply of textbooks and other learning resources. 12 million textbooks will be delivered this year. We have connected 72% of public schools and high schools to the Internet and broadband to promote hybrid education. 15,000 teachers have been trained in the use of these technologies.
He also promised to continue promoting the STEAM approach to better train students in science, mathematics, technology and art, and encourage them to participate in national and international competitions.
“Over the past four years, the Government has made great efforts to guarantee the mobility of students, implementing the school transport system TRAE, which already safely transports half of Dominican schoolchildren between home and school. By the end of this year, in 2024, the system will cover our entire school population,” he pointed out.
He added that the Dominican Republic is already on the right path to improve education, as shown by the progress we have made in the indicators reported by PISA, where we have achieved an average increase of 16 points in the last test in 2022. By the measurement in 2018, this was our first improvement.
He said that of the 81 participating countries, only 11 had made progress in the 2018-2022 cycle, and only two of them were in Latin America: the Dominican Republic and Panama.
In this sense, it reaffirms the commitment to continue investing in all levels of education (primary, higher and technical). The latter, technical schools, have made extraordinary progress in the last four years, as we went from only 7 INFOTEP schools in 2020 to 51 schools today.
“We are ensuring that every region of our country, regardless of geography or socioeconomic status, has the tools to enable our citizens to continue to learn, grow and prosper,” he said.
