“We are prepared to impose additional sanctions and will take all other necessary steps,” Matthew Miller said.

Miller said the United States does not rule out imposing additional sanctions. Miller said the first batch of sanctions was not just because of Russian law, it also applies to all recent violations, including the violent crackdown on protesters.

The Georgian government still has time to change its current trajectory.

“The action today is not just about this law that they passed. It’s about how they’re suppressing dissent. It’s about the statements that their leaders have made to chart the path that Georgia has already taken. So there’s still time to turn things around, and our policies will be shaped by the policies that Georgia implements,” Miller said.

The US State Department announced the first set of sanctions in support of the Russian law. Press spokesman Matthew Miller made the announcement at a press conference in Sahdeep. The first batch of sanctions affects up to 30 people.
