I had the pleasure of reading Jorge Debravo’s poem “Suits” where he points out that we have become so used to wearing old suits that we wear them to church, at home, in government, in offices in general, in our daily lives.
When considering changing it, we become frightened and paralyzed. Furthermore, the poet says, we tend to adjust our customs, creeds, and thoughts to fit the “narrowness of that old moth-eaten garment” before even considering change.
He commented that one day we deserve to be brave enough to throw away that old suit and give ourselves the opportunity to wear a new one. This call invites us to think about injecting good thoughts and actions into society. To show our children, colleagues and other members that it is possible to reach a world full of faith and hope, away from deadly pits, mud and swamps.
There is so much negativity and unfounded criticism and abuse in Costa Rica. Personally, I think we are in trouble because most of us are rowing in the opposite direction.
I agree with the poet when he says that the real problem is not knowing where to go, but how to do it. It is more a question of attitude and thinking, a question of doing before doing.
Let us have a chance to reflect on the value and power of our words as we use them to construct or limit. Wise Solomon said, “A word spoken in due time is like apples of gold set with silver” and “A kind tongue can even break bones.”
Let us dream and work for a better and more prosperous Costa Rica, with a better distribution of national income based on the well-being of the people. A society based on respect, enrichment and true happiness. It is time for all of us to think about contributing to development, to think about changing our old clothes and putting on clothes of hope and positivity.
