Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Karen Giloyan summarized the performance of Armenian athletes and spoke about the organizational issues of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Armenia’s participation in the Paralympic Games, which will open on August 28, and the operation of the “Armenian Olympic House” in Paris.
“The Olympics are the toughest sporting event and a severe test for organizers. It is very difficult to accommodate about 11,000 athletes, numerous delegations and millions of fans. Opinions and preferences may differ, but these are the Olympics; there should be peace here, because the purpose of the Olympics is to stop wars. From an organizational point of view, the Paris Olympics were the best ones in my opinion. Paris welcomed the Olympians with love and I am sure that these Games will become the best memories for many people,” said Karen Giloyan.
Speaking about the performance of Armenian athletes, the Deputy Minister of Education, Physical Education and Sports noted that three of our 15 athletes participated in the Olympics with so-called “white cards”. They did not expect to win medals, and he considered the overall performance satisfactory.
“The policies adopted and strategies developed by the Armenian government cannot produce quick results. Investments in sports today will not turn into medals tomorrow. It takes time. The effects of the policies implemented by the Armenian government in sports are currently more visible in junior and youth championships, judging by medals. We are on the right track and will make noticeable progress at the Los Angeles Olympics. In the next month, we will conduct professional analysis and discussions, and then we will work with the federations to prepare for the next Olympics,” assured Deputy Minister Giloyan.
Armenia is located in the heart of Paris
During the Olympic Games, the “Armenian Olympic House” operated in the building of the Armenian General Philanthropic Organization in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. The initiative was realized with the support of the companies “Fastex”, “Unibank” and “Yucom”.
“This was the first time that fans had the opportunity to meet the athletes after the games and communicate with them. We organized joint viewings and a lot of people participated. I think it was a very successful initiative. We had a warm and welcoming piece of Armenia in the heart of Paris,” said Karen Giloyan.
About participating in the Paralympics
The Deputy Minister of Physical Education and Sports also revealed that Armenia will send representatives who have qualified for the ranking tournament for the first time to the Paralympic Games in Paris from August 28 to September 8. Greta Vardanyan (para-weightlifting), Smbat Karapetyan (unicycle) and Sargis Stepanyan (shot put) of the Armenian national Paralympic team will participate in the competition.
