Italian General Roberto Vannacci, who was elected to the European Parliament in June’s European Parliament elections as an independent candidate on the Northern League’s list, has said he will not leave the Northern League.

Responding to a question from Affaritaliani.it on Wednesday about whether he wanted to found a “Sovereign Europe” party and leave the League, he said that “this commission that was born in August 2023 to turn the world upside down” was transforming from a “cultural association to a political association – nothing more”.

He said his association “attracts anyone who shares my position” and that “the League will also benefit given that Wannacci is a League MEP and has no intention of leaving”.

Vanatch is one of the six vice-presidents of the European Parliament’s newly formed European Patriots group.

The group’s MEPs elected Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s right-wing National Rally (RN), as leader of the group.
