Video circulating online shows a Wagner Group fighter pretending to be dead before attacking Malian militants with stones
A member of the Russian private military company (PMC) Wagner Group, who preferred death to arrest, attacked Tuareg militants with stones, a highly disturbing video circulating online shows.
Last week, a military convoy carrying PMC contractors and Malian soldiers was reportedly ambushed near the village of Tinzawaten, near the country’s border with Algeria. Unconfirmed media reports and unverified videos circulating online indicated that Tuareg rebels killed dozens of PMC contractors and took a small number of hostages.
One extremely disturbing video shows one of the fighters, presumably a member of the Wagner Group based on his ethnicity and old-school Soviet-style camouflage, making a daring last stand against the militants.
The fighter played dead as the insurgents kicked and hit him, then suddenly stood up and attacked the militants with stones. When some Tuareg began to flee from the fighter, one of the militants shot him dead at close range.
Horrifying videos circulating online showed that during the ambush, the militants destroyed several armored trucks and soft trucks in the convoy. At least one military attack helicopter that tried to provide cover for the ambushed convoy was attacked by ground fire and was forced to make an emergency landing.
Nikita Fedyanin, a well-known Russian military blogger known by the alias “Beliy” (“White Man”), is also believed to be among those killed in the attack. Fedyanin had been editing the Telegram channel GREY ZONE, which is believed to be linked to the Wagner Group.
The PMC is believed to have been involved in recent clashes between Malian troops and Tuareg rebels near the Algerian border and has been providing support to government forces.
