Ana Vetau always thought she would work in a hotel, but her perspective changed after she got married and helped her husband with farm work.
She found it more fun to work on the farm and take the produce to market to sell.
The 35-year-old Nadroganarata village resident is well known for selling boiled corn near the Suva Municipal Market bus stop and has become quite a familiar face in Suva.
She said that life is full of hardships and hard work is necessary for success.
“After completing Form Six, I enrolled in the Hotel Management College because I always wanted to work in the hotel industry,” said Ms Vita.
“I even completed an internship at the Ramuudua Point Marina Apartments.
“But then I got married in Nadroga and worked with my husband on his farm.”
She said she enjoys farming because it is one of her hobbies.
“I was born in Namosi and I have always loved farming. It is my hobby and I fell in love with it when I worked on the farm with my husband.
“I feel proud and satisfied when I harvest my crops and take them to the market to sell.
“I know it’s not easy, but without hard work you won’t be successful no matter what field you work in.”
Ms. Vitao said that agricultural production is not always smooth sailing and faces many challenges.
“The main challenge we face is the impact of weather and climate change. Our agricultural products are affected during floods and droughts. Sometimes everything we grow is washed away by floods.
“We also have to ensure that we continue to get supplies so that we have a stable income.
“Many times, we run out of produce, in which case we buy from other farmers and sell.”
“On the other hand, everything we eat is fresh, like vegetables, and our bodies are healthy while working on the farm. Our bodies get the necessary regular exercise.
“I have four children and they sometimes come with us to the farm.”
Ms. Vitaut advised people to make the most of their land resources.
“People shouldn’t leave land unused. My advice is, use the land and plant it and you will reap the rewards. It’s a good feeling to see your hard work pay off – for me – and it motivates me to continue.
“People, especially young people who can’t find jobs, should consider a career in agriculture.”
