Viral NU logo mistaken for Netanyahu United, PBNU: Not good: National Okezone

Jakarta – The viral “Nahdlatul Ulama” (NU) logo was distorted and written as “Netanyahu United.” The pun came after five NU scholars were spotted visiting Israel and meeting with President Isaac Herzog, at a time when the world is mourning the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza by Zionist forces.

PBNU Education Chairman Moh Mukri believes that changing the NU logo is unethical and unsightly because the five scholars’ visit to Israel was clearly a personal initiative and did not involve the NU organization.

“Unethical behavior, people’s criticism or other behavior is not allowed, but that person’s (visit) was private. NU itself, PBNU, felt offended and disappointed, why did something like this happen, and then it turned into an unpleasant joke,” Mukri said in an interview on Tuesday (July 16, 2024).

He added that the five, Sukron Makmun, Zainul Maarif, Munawir Aziz, Nurul Bahrul Ulum and Izza Annafisah Dania, were suspected of intentionally using NU’s name and visiting without permission. If found guilty, they will be summoned and sanctioned.

“Some people claim to be NU members, so they went to Israel to meet the president or say anything without permission, but why did they mention the name of NU? So they are called those people. If they are indeed cadres of the National University or managers of any institution, they will definitely be sanctioned, right? “He is insensitive,” he said.

He did regret the actions of the five men because it had a negative impact on the image of the PBNU, even though the Islamic mass organization was credited with contributing to the protection of the Republic of Indonesia from invaders.

“PBNU has done an excellent job in serving the country of the Republic of Indonesia, and (this visit) was not by an institution but by an individual, someone who made the visit without permission and in the name of NU,” he said.

The most severe sanction is the dismissal of the PBNU management. In addition, if one of them is a current lecturer at Unusia, they will also be fired.

“Yes, fired by the management, or if he is a lecturer, fired by the lecturer. It is a serious violation and a violation of ethical standards,” he said.
