Osame Sahraoui (23) chose Morocco. This is not a disaster in itself for the Norwegian FA. But the way it was communicated was lacking.
If I understand correctly:
Just last Sunday, national team coach Starr Solbakken spoke with Osame Sahraoui, in which nothing was unclear about the possible choice between Norway and Morocco.
He himself confirmed this to VG and issued this statement:
“I discussed with him on Sunday night his role in the team and the squad. It was good and there was no discussion about Morocco.”
Two days later, Solbakken announced the national team squad for the matches against Kazakhstan and Austria, with Osame Sahrawi included. In a press conference, Solbakken was asked about the chances Morocco presented to Sahara.
The national team coach said he spent little time thinking or convincing Sahrawi.
“The thought didn’t enter my mind. He’s been taken out with us four or five times already.”he said at the time.
On the same day/evening, unconfirmed reports from Morocco stated that Al-Sahrawi was considering choosing Morocco as he had not played a meaningful A-level international match (qualifiers or play-offs) for Norway. Osame Al-Sahrawi has only one A-level international match, a training match against Jordan in 2023.
The next day, Wednesday, the rumors about Morocco intensified. But when Solbakken confronted them, he responded:
“He is ready for the meeting,” the national team manager wrote in a text message to VG.
The same day, VG spoke to Osame Sahraoui’s father, Jaafar. He would not comment on the rumors. This usually means there is something in them.
Two days later, on Friday, came the news that Osameh Al-Sahrawi had chosen Morocco.
In other words, Sahara is not ready to merge with Norway.
Here, communication fails, either one way or both ways.
Over the years, it has become more common for footballers with dual nationality to fall into such a situation. In the Berisha family, Wallonia chose Kosovo and Vitton Norway. Bersant Celina also chose Kosovo and most recently in a press conference on Tuesday, U-21 manager Jan Peder Jalland confirmed that Christos Zafeiros chose Greece as his preferred choice for the national team and national team.
What is odd about the Osameh Sahrawi decision is that communication seemed to be lacking, or at best unclear. Someone must have been talking to each other before this decision was made public, or not listening well.
To the outside world, it seemed strange that Sahrawi chose Morocco just days after the Norwegian national team coach said “he was ready for a meeting”.
The current situation of the national team is that there are probably more good offensive players than ever before. There is no point in trying to convince a player whose mind is in another country.
But the national team management must be careful not to assume that “everyone” will join the team, especially as long as there are other options. If the player has enough potential, negotiations between the two sides should probably be intensified.
It wasn’t long before Frederik Olnes said “no” to the Norwegian team, and even if there is no comparison, the player options will automatically be reduced because neither Sahrawi nor Olnes have anything to do with the Norwegian team.
Lack of communication is a major cause of many conflicts and disagreements in life, and this also applies to football. In the future, it must be improved, so that Ståle Solbakken and his colleagues can at least avoid getting hit in the head by a “bomb” two days after the players are “ready to assemble”.
