Made a decade before Flaherty’s epic poem, The Arans, this short film is probably the earliest surviving film of the island. It offers a multifaceted look at life on the island, showing locals going about their daily lives: cattle being tethered to boats and rowed to waiting ships; tourists taking photos of islanders; and men participating in a game of stone throwing (“ag caitheamh cloch nirt”).

Thrilling footage shows four men tied together with ropes on the island climbing the rugged cliffs. Cliff Man And may try to catch birds or steal their eggs. While the elders were busy battling the bad weather and country life, some children were delighted by the visiting cameras.
