Teachers, staff, students and parents: In Noumea, the education community at Tuband College is waiting for the school to reopen, with additional police deployed to ensure a safe resumption of classes. Nearly 500 students have been assigned to other secondary schools in the city. 70 cancellations have been recorded.
Smoke blanketed the Tuband area in southern Noumea on Thursday morning, as some drivers entered Henri-Gaspard Street from the Eau Vive roundabout while others turned back. The neighborhood has been affected by violence since the beginning of the unrest and the situation remains unstable.
In this context, the reopening of the Academy is considered impossible. Students will return to school from Monday, July 8, but in other public places. The 70 teachers and educators of the institution also expressed their dissatisfaction with this. On July 2 this year, they decided to write to the High Commissioner to express their dissatisfaction with the emergency: ensure the safety of Tubande College and resume classes on campus.
“Staff and parents requested that law enforcement at least be present.”Fabienne Kadooka, Secretary General of SFA-CGC, explained. “If only to reassure people. Maybe there’s a dissuasive presence. Some people around here are uneasy. But we can recover in this building, it’s not damaged.”
If new measures are not taken, university rooms will remain empty until the August school holidays. APE has launched a petition demanding the reopening of the institution and shared it on social networks. It shows 649 signatures.
