For fifteen years, the Rex Theatre has welcomed and trained young people in dance, theatre, audiovisual… With the crisis, this community-funded talent development base was threatened. However, in August, attendance increased by 12%.
For 15 years, Le Rex has been a unique talent incubator. For an annual membership fee of 1,000 francs, 300 young people regularly come here to study audio-visual, video games, music, theatre and dance.
But due to the crisis, the building is threatened with closure.We haven’t signed the agreement yet, the money hasn’t been paid yet, so we hope, we pray, that we continue with our actions… We have visibility until the end of the year thanks to our cash flow”, explains Nadège Lagneau, Director of Rex.
Students and teachers are excited to resume activities after a month of closure due to these events.”This is where I discovered my passion, this is where I train, take classes and meet people”, said member Noam Gowet.It’s kind of like my second home.”, added another.
In this cultural venue, Guillaume flourished despite his disability and Norm discovered his passion: digital art. ” I have cultivated myself, learned a lot, and learned everything about the writing board and Rex. It would be a pity to close it. ”, commented member and intern Guillaume Deplanque.
Despite adjusted schedules, travel difficulties and curfews, attendance at Rex is up: 12% in August compared to last year.
The installation of Rex in the future youth centre was planned for the end of 2025, but in an interview with DNC colleagues, the Noumea City Hall confirmed the abandonment of the project.
