06-26-24.-The Chilean Senate approved on Tuesday a project to request the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for Nicolás Maduro for alleged crimes against humanity.

The Senate voted 21 in favor, urging ICC prosecutor Karim Khan to proceed with the arrest of the Venezuelan president.

“We demand an arrest warrant for Maduro. The torture, persecution and bans that Maduro has imposed so that Venezuelans can live in freedom place on us, the Chilean Senate, a moral obligation today to demand that President Gabriel Boric recognize not only the victory of Edmundo González, but that the ICC can arrest Maduro,” they said.

The initiative was proposed by Macarena Solís de Ovando Gómez, Assistant Counsellor for Victims Affairs at the ICC, who is part of a team representing victims in the ICC’s “Situation in Venezuela” process, led by victims’ legal representative Juan Carlos Gutiérrez.

Likewise, this request comes at a time of crisis in Venezuela, after the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced on July 28 that Nicolás Maduro had been re-elected president with 52% of the vote, compared to opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia’s 43%.

Thousands of Venezuelans from various popular neighborhoods in Caracas and other parts of the country took to the streets to protest against the questioning of Nicolás Maduro’s re-election and demanded from the National Electoral Council that Maduro provide an electoral record of his victory.
