North Texas was hit by storms on Saturday night, killing at least two people and causing significant material damage, while the U.S. Weather Service confirmed that the worst is over, local media reported.
Emergency services were continuing search operations across the southern United States on Sunday morning, with severe weather and power outages also affecting Oklahoma and Arkansas.
In North Dallas, two people died after a storm pounded a residential street, county safety officer Ray Sappington told local TV station WFII. “I can confirm the two fatalities, but I can also tell you that number is going to go up,” he said.
“We are still searching for victims and I’m sure we’ll still find survivors,” he added. Sappington spoke on a storm-battered highway where dozens of people sought shelter at a gas station. He noted that “many” people were injured.
About 375,000 homes were without power in Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas on Sunday morning, according to the website poweroutage.us. A storm warning remained in effect for the region on Sunday, but the worst was over, according to the National Weather Service.
