The Japanese Embassy has announced that Sri Lanka will introduce a new skills test in the field of building cleaning in July 2024 for those seeking employment as specific skilled workers in Japan.

Together with the existing skills tests in nursing, food services and agriculture implemented since 2022 and the recently added skills tests in construction, airport ground handling and accommodation, Sri Lanka will have skills tests in seven areas, with the addition of a new skills test for building cleaning.
Building cleaning is the work of removing environmental pollutants in buildings such as office buildings, shopping malls and hotels to maintain the sanitary conditions inside the buildings, such as foyers, passages, toilets, floors and bed-making in hotels. House cleaning work is not included in building cleaning work.

The Japanese Embassy sincerely hopes that many talented and ambitious Sri Lankans will take advantage of this new opportunity to work in Japan’s building cleaning industry, which is expected to welcome up to 37,000 foreign workers in the five years starting in 2024. The Japanese Embassy will continue to provide the necessary support and cooperation for Sri Lanka’s development, further deepening our long-standing friendship with Sri Lanka.

For more information on the skills test, please visit the following website of the Japan Building Maintenance Association. It contains an introductory video on building cleaning (available in Sinhala, English and Japanese), a textbook (available in Sinhala, English and Japanese) and a practical test preparation video.
