The 60th Venice Art Biennale has set a record for the highest participation of African countries. If nine countries participate in 2022, this number will increase to 25 in 2024. Despite Morocco’s last-minute defection, Benin, Tanzania and Ethiopia have new participants. Benin explores feminist themes through works by Moufouli Bello, Ishola Akpo, Chloé Quenum and Romuald Hazoumè, who are among the artists included in the Jean Pigozzi Collection of Contemporary African Art, the largest private collection dedicated to contemporary African art. Ethiopia exhibits figurative paintings by Tesfaye Urgessa inspired by German Expressionism at Saatchi Yates in London, while Senegal presents works by Alioune Diagne, which are now also on view at the Templon Gallery in Paris. Finally, in Tanzania’s “Visual Factory”, Luke Mwaskisopile, Happy Robert and Haji Chilonga are represented by Rangi Gallery in Dar es Salaam. Tracing Footprints.
