CARACAS, June 20. – Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced the indictment of four opposition politicians, accusing them of inciting hatred and association crimes for stepping up the persecution of the country’s opposition in the face of the presidential elections of July 28.
“Luis Lopez, Juan Iriarte, Jean Carlos Rivas and Ismael González have been charged and deprived of their liberty for incitement to hatred and association,” Saab said on the X social network account.
He then assured that the four defendants, during an event of the opposition Venezuela Wind party, tried to “enter” the Bolivarian National Guard post in Maiquetia, seeking to “cause harm to the troops of the aforementioned military branch, keeping them anxious and uneasy” and “causing terror to the inhabitants of the area”, an act he considered a hate crime.
In this sense, he is convinced that the purpose of such acts is to “provoke fear and cause psychological or physical harm to people” due to prejudice based on race, nationality, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.
“Any behavior involving incitement to hatred, attacks on public institutions, burning of people, attempted coup, armed rebellion, riots… will be severely punished for the whole of the above bad behavior: the real basis of Nazi-fascism”, the prosecutor added, “We will never allow this to happen in Venezuela”.
Sabo also issued arrest warrants for opponents Johnny Rivas and Gilkes Alcilla, who are “eluding” and may be involved in the actions.
