Public administration expert and former head of the presidential office Eugene van der Sand said the National Party of Suriname (NPS) must ensure a 100% increase in the Surinamese elections on May 25, 2025. This would help the Green Party enough to get 12 seats.
Public administration experts say that Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk’s party, ABOP, must ensure a 100 percent increase in order to retain the current 10 seats held by ABOP/PL.
“Because in the new system, those 10 seats now become five seats. So Den musu gro nanga 100% fu meki a tron 10 baka. The NPS must ensure 100% growth to reach 12 seats. If it grows 50%, there will only be nine seats left,” van der Sand said on the Bakana Tori show.
Van der Sand analyzed the various political parties that use the national proportional system based on their 2020 vote counts.
Depending on the exact number of votes, the NPS would gain 6 seats. The NDP, on the other hand, would have to grow by 50% to get 18 seats. Getting the right number of votes in 2025 would actually have a negative impact on the Purple Party, as the party would fall back from 16 seats to 12 seats by then.
The party’s development is therefore necessary if it hopes to return to the centre of power and, as mentioned, obtain a pardon for the fugitive and convicted Desi Bouterse. Van der Sand said the NPS and NDP would then be enough to win a total of 30 seats.
The VHP would then only have 11 seats, which would immediately mean a 50% drop for the party. Van der Sand expects the Orange Party’s decline to be based on the dissatisfaction of the majority of Surinamese people.
Public administration experts point out that these big parties must consider themselves secure as other smaller parties will fish in the same pond to gain seats.
