The USP Students’ Union said it would not intervene in disputes between USP management and sacked staff, noting that any remedies arising from such disputes would need to follow legal procedures.
The association’s president, Lepani Naqarase, said they respect the procedures and processes set out in the respective statutes and bylaws of USP and the USP Board of Governors.
He said: “Taking into account the concerns expressed by some members of the USPSA, senior executives including those of the Laucala chapter met with members of the senior management team including the Vice-Chancellor, Acting Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Dean of Graduate Studies and Deans of the relevant colleges to discuss proposed arrangements for the affected students.”
“USPSA also met with students temporarily impacted by this incident and listened to their concerns.”
Nakalasai said the association’s first priority is to actively promote and safeguard the general welfare of students.
“Following the meeting, USPSA was satisfied with the arrangements that management had put in place to ensure that services for these students were not interrupted.”
He further said: “The USP Student Union will actively adhere to the arrangements agreed with the management… and maintain regular communication with the management, including the Vice-Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia.”
