The University of the South Pacific Staff Association has voted in favour of industrial action to remove Vice-Chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia.

95 per cent of University of the South Pacific staff in Fiji supported the strike in a four-hour secret ballot that ended at 4pm yesterday at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala campus.

The Association of USP Staff (AUSPS), which represents academic and research staff, had a turnout of 61%, with 96% voting in favour of a strike.

The University Staff and Support Union (USPSU), which covers administrative and support staff, also showed strong support, with more than 70 percent voting and 94 percent in favor.

The vote follows unresolved grievances with Ahluwalia’s leadership, including serious governance issues and the recent sacking of AUSPS president Dr Tamara Osborne-Naikatini, which AUSPS secretary general Rosalia Fatiaki described as the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Staff from USP centres in Lautoka, Labasa and Savusavu took part in the vote.

The Employment Department has overseen the process and will soon announce the official results and formal approval.

Professor Ahluwalia’s contract was recently extended for two years, until 2026.
