Jakarta(ANTARA) –
The rise of online gambling in Indonesia has become a serious concern for society and the government as it will have a negative impact not only on the economy but also on social life.

Technology is the main tool that can be used to combat this threat, by detecting, blocking and cutting off access to online gambling sites.

With the increase in internet penetration and smartphone use, online gambling activities in the country are also increasing.

The negative effects of online gambling are enormous, including financial losses, psychological problems, and even criminal behavior.

The use of technology is one of the keys to combating online gambling. Artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analysis can be used to detect suspicious patterns and illegal activities on the internet.

Advantages and Challenges

Cybersecurity expert Pratama Persadha said the threat posed by online gambling is serious and can be addressed using technology.

“Using technology to detect and block access to online gambling sites requires a multi-layered approach involving a variety of tools and techniques,” he told between.

There are many effective methods to detect and block online gambling sites, such as blocking the DNS and IP addresses not only on the landing page site, but also on the online gambling servers.

Using deep packet inspection (DPI) to examine the contents of data packets sent across a network can also help detect and block traffic related to online gambling.

Additionally, monitoring keywords is a crucial step as online gambling site operators often use figurative words or combinations of letters and numbers that may not be detected by the system.

While many solutions are offered, there are challenges in using technology to eradicate online gambling.

Persadha, who is also chairman of the Communications and Information Systems Security Research Center (CISSReC), said online gambling sites often employ techniques such as domain rotation, encryption and the use of proxy servers to avoid detection and blocking.

As a result, some blocking techniques may not be fully effective and may be circumvented by users using virtual private networks or the Tor network.

Another challenge is that not all ISPs have the technical capacity to effectively apply blocking solutions. There are also concerns that this would infringe on user privacy and Internet freedom principles.

“Gambling servers are also often operated in jurisdictions where gambling is legal, so it is difficult to block access from countries where gambling is prohibited,” he said.

Artificial Intelligence Utilization

Preventing and dealing with online gambling requires comprehensive management and advanced technical means. The application of artificial intelligence and big data analysis can greatly improve the ability to monitor and combat illegal online gambling.

AI can also be used to monitor internet traffic and identify suspicious behavior. Through machine learning, AI can be trained to recognize specific signs of illegal online gambling activity.

Big data analytics is the ability to collect and analyze large amounts of data from a variety of sources, which in the context of online gambling includes financial transaction histories, internet access records, and social media interactions.

Using advanced analytical algorithms, this data can be processed to identify patterns that indicate illegal gambling.

The combination of AI and big data can also be used to develop predictive models that can identify illegal gambling sites before they become fully active.

By analyzing historical data and current trends, the model can predict when and where new illegal gambling sites will emerge so that authorities can proactively take action to prevent such activity.

AI technology can also be used for sentiment analysis on social media and discussion forums since Many illegal gambling operators use social media to promote their services.

By analyzing content and user sentiment, AI can identify illegal gambling marketing campaigns and take steps to remove or block the content.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) also play a vital role in preventing online gambling. As the primary gateway for Internet users to access online content, ISPs have the technical and strategic capabilities to block or limit access to illegal gambling sites.

ISPs are also able to monitor internet traffic and identify suspicious behavior patterns. Using big data analytics and AI tools, ISPs can detect activity that may be related to illegal online gambling.

They can also disseminate information through their websites, emails, or public service announcements to educate users about the risks of illegal online gambling.

Government efforts

The Ministry of Communications and Information has incorporated artificial intelligence technology into its surveillance systems.

Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport has adopted artificial intelligence technology in the Automatic Identification System (AIS), said Usman Kansong, director of the Ministry of Transport’s Public Information and Communications Department.

Artificial intelligence technology works 24 hours a day to find and identify content that may violate the rules, including online gambling, pornography and hate speech.

The AIS automatically flags detected content, which is then verified by a team from the Ministry of Communications and Information as to whether it is related to online gambling before deciding on further action.

In the case of content on social media, the ministry cannot delete it immediately, but must instead ask platform managers to take down problematic content.

However, if the content is on a website or portal, the Ministry has the right to directly block or cut off access.

Even so, cutting off access and blocking is not enough because online gambling sites are growing so rapidly.

Therefore, AI is now not only used to search for online gambling content, but is also used by relevant agencies and departments to analyze transactions and recipient bank accounts to prevent illegal transactions.

Nezar Patria, Nigeria’s deputy minister of communications and informatics, said the ministry is working with stakeholders such as the National Police (Polri) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to use artificial intelligence to eradicate online gambling.

The ministry also reinforced the commitment of technology companies including Google to support the eradication of online gambling.

Technology plays a vital role in combating online gambling in Indonesia. Through sustainable innovation and collaboration, the threat can be minimized, thereby protecting the community from the negative impacts of online gambling.

Law enforcement efforts must also be maximized in order to effectively eradicate online gambling and create a deterrent effect on operators, agents and gamblers.
