Russia released several prisoners Thursday as part of a historic swap deal with the United States and other Western nations, including Wall Street Journal reporters Evan Gershkovitz and RFE/RL Kurmasheva, and former Marine Paul Whelan, who arrived late Thursday night (local time) at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington.

The releasers were personally welcomed by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The swap deal follows more than a year of negotiations between the United States, Germany and three other countries, as well as Russia.

In addition, U.S. President Biden said late Thursday night that he was “very concerned” about the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, while he once again called on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to ensure a ceasefire agreement in the Middle East and enter the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.

“I’m very concerned about this situation,” Biden told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, welcoming Russia’s release of Americans from prison as part of a swap deal.

He added that the assassination of Hamas political leader Israel Haniyeh in Iran would not help “resolve” the situation.
