US tech billionaire Peter Thiel appears to have abandoned plans to build a 330-metre luxury lodge on Lake Wanaka.
The PayPal co-founder and prominent Donald Trump supporter had envisioned a private residential community built into the hillside and covered in grass and shrubs.
The building can accommodate up to 30 guests and provide support for 15 to 30 staff.
Inspired by other luxury lodges in New Zealand, such as Queenstown’s Rosewood Matakauri Lodge, the lodge is planned to feature 11 guest rooms, an owners’ residence, a meditation building and a “backstage” facility.

The project has faced a series of obstacles, including the refusal of resource consent by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and The Environment Court subsequently dismissed the appeal.

In an earlier ruling, Environment Court Judge Prudence Steven said the proposed tree planting would not adequately shade buildings on a nearby public road or protect the area’s beautiful natural beauty.
Co-founder of PayPal and Palantir Technologies, early investor in Facebook, Thiel became a New Zealand citizen in 2011.

Thiel formally joined the Republican Party while serving on Trump’s transition team and was an early supporter of Trump’s outsider candidate.
Thiel invested $US15 million ($24.7 million) in Vance’s 2022 campaign and nurtured his political rise, according to CBS News. He also helped him win a competitive seat in the Republican primary.
