(CNS): Cabinet has rejected the Electoral Boundaries Commission’s report and recommendations on how to address Cayman’s imbalanced democratic landscape. UPM supports Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly’s motion to establish a new Boundaries Commission to conduct a review, according to a Cabinet note on the June 27 meeting released by government on Wednesday.

The latest EBC Last AugustBut since then, the government has remained silent on the matter. Steve McFieldOpposition MPs have also expressed concern about the length of time that has passed since the document was submitted to the government.

While the brief Cabinet note did not say why the government rejected the report, it said ministers had approved a motion to be tabled at the upcoming parliamentary session “proposing to accept the Governor’s order rejecting all recommendations in the 2023 Electoral Boundaries Commission report and to seek the Governor’s support under section 89 (1) of the Constitution to establish a new Electoral Boundaries Commission with revised Terms of Reference (ToR) to ensure fair representation and full consultation”.

This means that existing electoral districts will remain the same at the next general election, despite the large differences in their size.
