News from Angola – Maintaining the dignity of former combatants is a task for all sectors of society.
The statement was made by the president of the Association of Ex-Combatants, Constantín dos Santos, in a statement to the Angolan newspaper Notícias on the occasion of the association’s 49th anniversary (8 August).
According to the association’s chief, former combatants have been showing a desire to contribute to national development.
However, he said, these citizens should not be seen as serving only agricultural practices as they can contribute to other areas of knowledge.
From Constantin dos Santos’ perspective, when we dedicated most of our lives to fighting for the independence of this country, we were convinced that we had to work in different areas of development.
He stressed that although many are already old, they can still contribute their knowledge to the current generation as consultants or advisors.
On the occasion, he regretted that many of the projects handed over to ex-combatants were given by the executive branch without consulting the associations.
“We are partners of the state and in this case, we should be taken into consideration when implementing projects that benefit our members,” he said.
When asked about the current situation of ex-combatants, Constantin dos Santos believes that the situation has changed in recent years and only hopes that blood subsidies will improve.
On the occasion, the association’s leaders called on the media not to commemorate ex-combatants only on the association’s anniversaries but also when important events take place in the country.
The Association of Ex-Combatants (AAC) was founded on 8 August 1985 in Luanda.
