United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday praised the decision of Sudanese authorities to reopen the Adre border crossing between Chad and Darfur, Sudan, as the most direct and effective way to deliver humanitarian assistance to millions of people in Darfur facing record levels of hunger.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, Guterres stressed the importance of taking concrete and sustained measures to facilitate humanitarian access and protect civilians, which must be consistent with the obligations of the Sudanese parties under international humanitarian law and previously agreed modalities.

“Humanitarian organizations must have full, safe and unhindered access to all civilians in need in Darfur and across Sudan,” said Dujarric. “The United Nations remains fully committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to help end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.”
