Over 100 Uganda National Roads Authority-United East India Company Kampala station support staff are protesting the manner in which they were sacked last month.
The affected support staff include masons and porters, who are paid Sh25,000 (semi-skilled) and Sh15,000 (unskilled).
When the United Nations Relief Association (UNRA) was established in 2008, it inherited these resources from the Ministries of Works and Transport.
But since then, due to the increasing demand for local execution projects, more people have joined.
However, on July 8 last month, their world of employment came crashing down when, at a staff meeting, they were told they had overstayed their visas and after years of hard work and sacrifice, it was time to leave.
The departments are led by Jacob Asiimwe (Station Master), Sarah Nadunga (Administrative Assistant), Richie Muzale (Maintenance Engineer) and Moses Kyeyune (Mechanical Supervisor).
One affected support worker said: “We work in terrible conditions, sometimes without road signs, and without safety and protective clothing, especially for those who prepare the asphalt as they inhale dangerous fumes during the work.”
He added: “To make matters worse, as bosses enjoy the comfort of their air-conditioned offices, bills have been piling up and we are only getting the little money we earn for our work after months of delay.”
Some of the roads where the sacked support staff were engaged in routine maintenance include Kampala-Mukono Lugazi-Njeru, Nansana-Busunju-Lwamata road before it was handed over to contractor Energo Project, Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi road, Najja – Nyenga road, Kireka-Namugongo-Seeta road before it was handed over to contractor KIRU this year, Seeta Namilyango road, Mpererwe-Gayaza, Gayaza-Kalagi road, Kalagi Kayunga road, Mukono-Kalagi road and Lweza-Kigo road.
Another affected support worker revealed: “Remember, apart from the day allowance we signed up for, we are not eligible for any benefits like the National Social Security Fund, not even medication if one of us gets into an accident while at work.”
Worse still, they claim they were fired and did not receive their salaries for June and July.
“We have been fired and our June and July allowances have not been paid, yet the responsibility on our shoulders is unbearable. Since the Bukinwa Betty incident, the security chief has gone to great lengths to deny us access to the premises while we are asking for a refund, which is the worst decision the government has ever made,” said another affected employee, who further disclosed that they intend to petition the President and discuss their plight at a Cabinet meeting.
To them, the only reason to fire them is to make room for the boss’s relatives and friends.
Efforts to reach UNRWA, its works department and the Kampala station manager were unsuccessful by press time.
