The National Alliance is believed to have secured a majority of 4,133 votes in seven of the eight polling districts.
(FMT) – According to preliminary unofficial results, the National Alliance managed to retain the Sungai Bakap state seat in Penang with a majority of 4,133 votes.
An hour after the counting of votes began, Perikatan Nasional candidate Abidin Ismail was believed to have received more than 14,000 votes, while Pakatan Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin received 9,600 votes.
Election observers said turnout was low, with unofficial statistics putting total turnout at 68 percent. Although Malay voters turned out in higher numbers, ethnic Chinese and Indian voters were believed to have turned out in lower numbers.
A total of 39,279 people are eligible to vote.
The seat fell vacant following the death of PAS state assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff in May this year. Zamri, who was previously PAS Nibong Tebal chief, was elected in last year’s state assembly election, defeating Pakatan Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
Police said the voting process from 8 am to 6 pm was smooth and no complaints were received about violations of voting procedures or by-elections.
