University Campus Tragedy – ZimEye

The North West University (NWU) Vaal campus is in mourning after 22-year-old Mamohlotsi Rebecca Nchabeleng, a fourth-year Bachelor of Education student from Tafelkop, was found murdered in a room at a private residence on Monday, August 19, 2024.

The tragedy came a day after a devastating car accident claimed the lives of six Northwestern University’s Val campus students.

Nchabeleng’s cause of death was discovered after her boyfriend, who was not a student at Northwestern University, committed suicide. Police found his body at his home in Sharpeville, along with a suicide note, which led them to Nchabeleng’s residence. Vanderbijlpark police spokesperson Officer Sabelo Sigcu confirmed that police were investigating a murder case. The boyfriend’s suicide note indicated that he first killed Nchabeleng and then committed suicide. When police arrived at Nchabeleng’s residence, they found her lying in bed, unresponsive, and paramedics confirmed her death at the scene.
