A United Airlines flight bound for Guam experienced a technical malfunction shortly after takeoff early Thursday morning and ultimately made a safe emergency landing at Palau International Airport.
The crew of United Airlines Flight UA 158 made an emergency landing after a system failure occurred after takeoff from Palau. The situation was reported to the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) by the Air Traffic Services (AFIS) of the Aviation Administration at around 3 am.
In response to this situation, the Palau National Emergency Committee initiated procedures and key agencies were prepared for an emergency landing. Palau Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel were fully armed and deployed ARFF trucks to prepare for an emergency landing.
The plane reportedly circled near Airai for about 45 minutes to dump fuel before returning safely to the airport. The landing was uneventful.
“All of the airport drills we’ve done to prepare for this situation have paid off. Once the alert is raised, everyone is ready and on standby, and it’s become a habit,” said NEMO Director Wayman.
Among the passengers on the flight was Palau President Soulanger Whipps II, who was traveling to the U.S. mainland. The purpose of his trip was unclear at press time.
Aviation director-general Peter Polloi and public infrastructure and industry minister Charles Iyar could not be reached off-island by press time.
