Foreign Trade, Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Manoa Kamikamica said unions should negotiate with employers to adjust wages.

Mr Kamikamika said he recognised the Treasury’s comments on the minimum wage issue, but he believed salary adjustments should be coordinated between unions and employers.

“The salaries of civil servants are negotiated with the government,” he said.

“So we’re going to let that process run its course. Whatever the final decision is, it will be part of the budget.”

Mr Kamika said a committee was discussing the minimum wage.

“As Cabinet, we will wait for the outcome of this process. Once recommendations are made, Cabinet can then take some decisions.”

He said there was evidence that there was an urgent need to revise prevailing wage rates, but again this would be up to the committee conducting the consultations.

“As to the exact amount, we will follow the guidance of the Minimum Wage Consultative Committee.”
