Addis Ababa, June 20, 2024 (Address) Stonehenge, a prehistoric stone monument and archaeological site in southern England, has been vandalized by two protesters.
Two participants of the “Stop the Oil” campaign sprayed powder coating on some of the boulders at the UNESCO World Heritage site on Wednesday.
The protesters who threw powder at the 5,000-year-old monument were arrested: Niamh Lynch, a 21-year-old student from Oxford, and Rajan Naidu, a 73-year-old man from Birmingham.
Stop Oil, a group campaigning to end the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030, said the orange powder paint was corn flour and would “wash away in the rain”.
English Heritage and other experts in the field are still investigating the damage caused.
The action is said to be motivated by a demand that the UK government stop extracting and burning coal, oil and gas by 2030.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the action a “shameful act of vandalism”, while Labour leader Keir Starmer described Operation Stop Oil as “deplorable”.
The action was strongly condemned by the public, media and cultural heritage sectors, according to the BBC.
