The French Polynesian delegation is currently in India as part of a 46-nation delegationand World Heritage Committee meeting. This meeting is crucial to review the nomination of the mixed property “Te Henua Enata – Marquesas Islands”.
On the first day in New Delhi, the delegation was welcomed by the French Ambassador to India, Thierry Mathou. This exceptional moment made it possible to reiterate the importance of this issue and to underline France’s strong commitment to this process, continuing the commitment made by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, during his visit to Shivaji in 2022.
The Minister of Culture, Ronny Teriipaia, who was present with all the mayors of the archipelago, recalled that this candidacy represents a great opportunity for the development and influence of Finua. He insisted on the need to see this issue as a unique opportunity to promote the cultural and natural heritage of the Marquesas Islands.
The day was then structured around technical visits focused on environmental themes, in particular the treatment and recycling of waste and the recycling of rainwater. The delegation visited the Material Recovery Unit managed by Chintan, which is recognized for its expertise in sustainable waste management. She also visited the French Institute, where she met with representatives of the companies InRain and Uneako. InRain focuses on rainwater harvesting technologies, while Uneako develops innovative solutions using biodegradable materials to replace single-use plastics.
Finally, the delegation will proceed to the Bharat Mandapam Convention Center, where the World Heritage Committee meeting will take place to decide on the candidacy of the Marquesas Islands at around 3 p.m. local time (1:30 a.m. Friday, July 26, US time. Tahiti and the Marquesas are 2 hours away).
