UN General Assembly President Denis Francis called for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip, saying: “Enough is enough because many civilians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, most of them women and children.”
In his speech, Francis stressed the importance of supporting Palestinians in Gaza to rebuild their lives, achieve a ceasefire and begin a political process based on two states.
He added: “The longer the war goes on, the greater the risk of contagion and the risk of new dynamics emerging, so that has to be controlled. The last thing we need is a disaster spreading to the Middle East.”
He pointed out that the UN General Assembly was the body that adopted the first strong and decisive resolution on Gaza in October 2023, noting that the resolution called for a comprehensive ceasefire, not a temporary one.
Since October 7 last year, the Israeli occupation has continued its fierce, comprehensive and unprecedented aggression against the Gaza Strip, bombing from the air, land and sea, massacring Palestinian civilians, causing the martyrdom, injury and disappearance of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, causing large-scale casualties and property losses among the Palestinian people, in addition to the unprecedented humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip, and causing damage to infrastructure, facilities and important installations.
