(NST) – Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said it is unfair to assess Umno’s strength now to decide whether the party should go it alone in the 16th general election.
He said the party leadership would thoroughly investigate the matter in due course.
“We cannot judge now about 2027. When elections come closer, we will know the condition or strength of our party.
“We will see if we can do it alone or if we need partners to deal with the election. It is not fair to judge now whether we can win the 2027 election by ourselves,” he said during a visit to the media centre at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today, ahead of the 2024 Umno general assembly.
Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi asked delegates in his policy speech to question the wisdom of the party contesting alone in the 16th general election.
Zahid asked the delegates to consider the advantages the party currently has, including a larger voter roll, based on data and current sentiment.
Zahid said he did not run alone to avoid overlapping seats with other parties in the coalition government.
However, Zahid said in his policy speech that Barisan Nasional would continue to use the “dacing” (scales) symbol in any election.
