New Delhi: Amid its ongoing war with Russia, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Depal on Monday said India is Ukraine’s leader and called India a “world mentor”. The minister, who is on a four-day visit to India, said New Delhi, as a global player, has the potential to become a leader in promoting world peace and justice.
“India is indeed a world master as a global player,” Emina Jaipal told reporters after meeting Sanjay Verma, secretary of western affairs at the Delhi-based foreign ministry.
Jaipal wants India to play an active role in addressing global issues and challenges, especially in the areas of economy, energy and nuclear policy.
She also said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not a NATO problem or a US problem, but a problem of justice.
“Russia has always questioned the existence of our country,” she said, adding that in its 1,500-year history, Russia has never attacked any other country.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken several times with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky since the conflict in Ukraine broke out in February last year.
It is noteworthy that India has so far not condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has insisted that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.
Asked about India’s energy ties with Russia, Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Jaishankar urged the New Delhi government to diversify its resources, including energy and military contracts, to avoid dependence on any one country.
“We have no right to direct India’s economic relations with other countries,” she said.
She also said India should pragmatically diversify its energy resources, military contracts and political interactions.
This is the first visit by a Ukrainian minister to India since the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict.
