Three new production lines are being developed that will allow the Scranton plant to produce more mission-critical munitions, according to a senior company official. The total cost of the modernization program is approximately $400 million.
Improvements include new technology that increases projectile production efficiency and accuracy.
“Right now our focus is on the 155 caliber. That’s pretty much all we’re focused on. We’re working very hard to make sure we meet the goals that the Pentagon has set,” said Richard Hansen, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Commander at the plant.
In the early 20th century, the Pennsylvania plant was a locomotive repair shop. The Pentagon purchased the facilities and turned them into a plant for the production of large-caliber artillery. Since 2006, the plant has been operated by General Dynamics under contract to the U.S. government.
