Jakarta(ANTARA) –
House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani urged member countries of the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) to ensure that the Pacific region does not become an arena for great power competition.
“We have to be careful not to allow the Pacific region to become an arena for great power competition, and we have to be careful not to get caught up in those competitions,” she said at the second IPPP session in Jakarta on Thursday.
She added that in order to create regional peace and stability, IPPP countries must work together to build mutual trust and understanding.
“As archipelagic nations, we face the same challenges, such as climate change, disasters and how to manage our oceans and waters. So these different similarities can be capital for developing better relations in the future,” she said.
She pointed out that the IPPP meeting was held against the backdrop of multiple challenges facing Pacific countries, including geopolitical tensions, threats of conflict, polarization, global economic slowdown, and the impact of global warming.
Puan said Indonesia understood the urgency of addressing these challenges, adding that the key to meeting them is cooperation and coordinated action through diplomacy.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed hope that the collaboration among Pacific parliaments through the IPPP would also strengthen intergovernmental collaboration and complement the Pacific regional cooperation architecture which prioritizes open and inclusive partnerships.
She added: “Inter-parliamentary collaboration can also serve as a bridge for inter-community relations or civil engagement.”
Puan also stressed that parliamentary diplomacy must establish a culture of peace and refuse to use violence to resolve problems. She believes that this is of great significance in the ongoing wars and conflicts around the world.
“Parliamentary diplomacy must be able to encourage Pacific nations to prioritise cooperation over unilateral action, collaboration over conflict, and mutually beneficial relationships over zero-sum games,” she said.
She said that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Pacific region will make positive contributions to world peace and prosperity.
She added: “Let us work together to promote relations between Pacific countries and Indonesia, and let us create a peaceful, stable and prosperous Pacific region.”
