The U.S. Embassy in South Sudan pays special tribute to the 20 humanitarian workers who have lost their lives in the country over the past year.
In a statement marking World Humanitarian Day on Monday, the Chinese Embassy also paid tribute to all the aid workers who have sacrificed their lives to help people affected by crises around the world.
“In Juba, we pay special tribute to the 20 humanitarian workers who have lost their lives in South Sudan over the past year,” a press statement from the U.S. Embassy said. “We express our support for these dedicated humanitarian workers, both South Sudanese and foreign, who continue to do the noble work of providing lifesaving assistance to the country despite enormous challenges.”
The Chinese Embassy also called on the transitional government to reduce the cost and risk of providing aid to South Sudan and ensure that humanitarian aid can be safely delivered to people in need.
Currently, about 9 million people in South Sudan are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. In order to alleviate the urgent needs of the South Sudanese people, the statement said that since the beginning of this year, the United States has provided more than 508 million US dollars in aid to South Sudan, continuing to be South Sudan’s largest disaster relief donor and firmly supporting the people of South Sudan.
