Typhoon Shanshan, which passed through Japan with devastating effects and killed at least six people, is gradually weakening to a tropical storm as it moves eastwards. However, it continues to cause heavy rains and traffic chaos, and has issued landslide warnings, seriously affecting the population.
Kyushu was worst affected, with gusts reaching 252 km/h (152 mph), and the storm is expected to reach Tokyo between September 1 and 2.
The typhoon took a tragic toll, with landslides in Aichi Prefecture killing three members of the same family, with government spokesman Masaru Hayashi confirming the new deaths and fearing two more dead.
The situation has led Japanese authorities to issue the highest level of alert in multiple areas, advising the evacuation of more than four million people in Kyushu. Although it is unclear how many people have followed this advice, flood images from Kanagawa Prefecture show the severity of the situation, with vehicles almost submerged. In addition, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for possible landslides in Kyushu and Shizuoka.
