Turkey has blocked access to Instagram, the information technology regulator said on Friday, without specifying why or how long the ban would last. Users also cannot access it from the mobile app.
On Wednesday, Turkish presidential communications director Fahrettin Altun criticized the platform’s decision to block condolence posts over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
“This is pure censorship,” Altun told X, adding that Instagram’s decision was not based on policy violations.
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, did not immediately comment on the ban or Altun’s comments.
Turkey’s Information and Communications Technologies Authority (BTK) published the August 2 decision on its website.
