Turkish opposition leaders are trying to arrange a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad

Özgur Özil, chairman of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party, said he was trying to arrange a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad.
In an interview with Turkish journalist Fatih Tayli on his YouTube channel, he added: “For our part, we are conducting the so-called informal diplomacy with Syria and I am thinking of meeting with Assad in the coming days if conditions allow. We can arrange this meeting instead of a meeting that will take place some time later, or even the possibility of holding such a meeting this summer.”
However, Özil did not clarify during this period to what extent a time frame could be determined for the preparation of such a meeting. The Turkish opposition leader later noted that “contacts are being made through private diplomacy to see if it is possible to open closed doors in relations between the two countries.”

According to him, these contacts “are going well” and if successful, he will meet with Assad within the next month or a month and a half. In addition, he made it clear that he is ready to discuss the Syrian problem and solutions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Ozil said one of the main issues he wanted to discuss with Assad was the issue of Syrian refugees and their return home from Turkey.
He said “Assad has sent positive signals” and that the Republican People’s Party wants to try to establish dialogue.
Earlier, Turkish President Erdogan said there was no reason to prevent Turkey from establishing diplomatic relations with Syria.
He added that he did not rule out a meeting with President Bashar al-Assad to help restore bilateral relations between the two countries.
