Turin Cinema Museum has a record year and begins redesign

2023 was the best year ever for the Turin Cinematheque in terms of attendances (755,000, 12% more than 2019), while the first half of 2024, with almost 500,000 visitors, promises to do even better. For the most iconic site of the city of Turin – second only to the Egyptian Museum and the eighth cultural site in Italy – now is the time to take stock and, above all, plan for the future.

The director, Domenico De Gaetano, whose term ends next October, reflects on these figures, while it will be President Enzo Ghigo and the founding members, the City of Turin, the Piedmont Region, the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Fondazione CRT, among others, who will drive the renewal of the museum’s layout inside the Mole Antonelliana.

Between 2019 and 2023, the Cinema Museum’s revenues increased by more than 60%, from 3.5 million to more than 5.5 million, thanks to the increase in visitor numbers and public initiatives including exhibitions and festivals, guaranteeing a valuable contribution of close to a third, compared to the structure’s turnover of 18 million euros.

However, 24 years after opening in 2000, the museum dedicated to the history of Cunema had to reinvent itself. The project for the new museum involves the redesign of the entire layout, “which will become more immersive, technological and inclusive,” according to the director. The intervention involves, first of all, the renewal of all the systems that were in place before the opening.” In total, the works and the operation of the new equipment will take five to five years, with an estimated cost of around £40 million.

«We will do it in batches so as not to close the museum – explains the director – starting with the garden next to the mole that belongs to the museum, currently closed to the public, which will serve as the entrance to the museum with a ticket office, a cafeteria and a bookstore».
