Monday officially became the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching just below 31° at the De Bilt weather station near Utrecht, where the official record was set.
The highest temperature was recorded in Westdorp in Zeeland, where it reached 34°.
High temperatures and humidity forced many people to the seaside, and some roads were congested as people returned home in the evening.
Weather forecasters said Tuesday will be hot, with temperatures reaching 34°C in the east and mostly cloudy. The KNMI weather agency also issued a yellow weather warning for the eastern part of the country due to the threat of thunderstorms.
There is also a chance of storms on Wednesday, but the temperature will drop by a few degrees, the Netherlands Maritime News Agency said.
