Former Bayern Munich player and legendary star Lothar Matthaus has harshly criticised former coach Thomas Tuchel’s leadership style at the club.
According to the BBC on Sunday, Matthaus believes that Tuchel’s attitude and lack of faith in his players’ abilities contributed to his short stay at the club.
“In the past two years, Bayern Munich has stopped being a family. Bayern Munich is a one-man show, and Thomas Tuchel is that one-man show. He is a good coach, but not suitable for Bayern Munich.”
“It’s not a good situation in the dressing room because you’re (Joshua) Kimmich, you’re (Leon) Goretzka, these players made history at Bayern Munich, won titles, and now Tuchel comes and says he’s looking for a number six? That I’m not good enough?
“The atmosphere was not good because everyone was thinking, ‘I am no longer suitable for Bayern Munich, but I have won eight titles in the last eight years, won the Champions League and I play for the German national team. What does he want?'” Matthaus asked.
He added that the situation was not right for the German giants, saying: “It’s a big problem because he doesn’t give confidence to the players. He lost a lot of players who were very important for Bayern Munich.
Tuchel was appointed in March 2023 following the sacking of another former coach, Julian Nagelsmann.
Matthaus, who captained West Germany to the 1990 World Cup title, believes that with Tuchel’s departure the trophy will belong to Kane.
Kane left Tottenham last August as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 280 goals in 435 games, and subsequently signed a four-year contract with Bayern for an initial sum of €100m (£86.4m) plus add-ons.
However, despite the England captain scoring 36 Bundesliga goals in his first season in charge of Bayern, his side finished a disappointing third, 18 points behind champions Leverkusen.
Bayern also crashed out of the German Cup at the hands of third-tier Saarbrücken and lost to eventual champions Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
“I don’t think he (Kane) will score 36 goals again. But maybe he doesn’t need to. This year, he will be motivated by a new coach, a new team and a new spirit,” Matthaus, who won the Bundesliga title seven times with Bayern Munich, told BBC Sport.
Matthaus is confident that new coach Vincent Kompany, who has taken over from Thomas Tuchel at the helm, will lead the Bavarians back to winning ways.
The former Burnley manager came up against his striker Kane on a number of occasions during his time with Premier League title holders Manchester City.
But Matthaus expressed his confidence in Kompany, saying: “I know him from his time at Hamburg, he knows the Bundesliga, he speaks the Bundesliga language.
“To be a coach at Bayern Munich you have to understand this mentality. The new coach is talking to the players, he embraces them and tells them clearly what he expects.
“The atmosphere is much better now and I think, as we saw in Leverkusen last year, this atmosphere can make a difference.”
The Bayern Munich legend insists his former club will win the Bundesliga title in 2024/25
He said: “Leverkusen and Bayern Munich are my favorite teams. I think they are both at the same level, but I have a feeling that Bayern Munich will win.”
Kompany’s first league match in charge is on Sunday when Bayern travel to Wolfsburg (14:30 GMT), when Kane, who has yet to win any major trophies, will lead the attack.
