Felipe Mujica, the national secretary general of the MAS, warned on Monday that the National Electoral Council (CNE) had for the first time in the presidential election not complied with the constitutional provisions for the aggregation of the results produced on Sunday, July 28.
“The Supreme Court is at the CNE this weekend to inspect the inspections carried out by the electoral body, but so far no one knows where this procedure comes from and why it is being carried out in this way.”
Mujica decried that there were no witnesses from opposition political parties and that even if they were present, it was unknown who they were.
“Venezuela’s entire people demand that the National Electoral Council comply with the obligations imposed by law, such as conducting the appropriate audit in the presence of witnesses and preparing a final report containing the true results of the presidential election.”
The Orange Awning leader explained that audits have always been a normal, common and crazy occurrence in any election campaign.
“For the first time, we are facing a situation where the CNE president has not made any report on what happened. Worse, TSJ has taken on responsibilities that have nothing to do with the law, such as investigating the results without a prior audit, which has created a lot of uncertainty and distrust in the election results.
Mujica noted that the only decision the TSJ should make at this point is to order the CNE to conduct a pending audit of the presidential election so that the Venezuelan people know exactly what happened.
Regarding the crackdown and arrests that followed recent peaceful protests, political leaders condemned the actions of different state security forces.
«An estimated 25 people have been killed and 2,300 have been detained, including 200 minors. These figures are shameful, all the more so when it is not known where they are being held and what crimes they are accused of.
Felipe Mujica insisted that some political leaders continue to be threatened and arrested and called on the competent organizations to clarify the situation. He mentioned the arrest of Carlos Molina, secretary of the Un Nuevo Tiempo organization in Carabobo state, and the uncertain situation of Javier Oropeza, mayor of Corolla.
«The Attorney General of the Republic may have issued an arrest warrant for María Corina Machado, considering her responsible for the violence that followed July 28. “The government is not seeking a peaceful path that would allow the true results of the elections to be known.”
He also noted that it was absurd that the electoral process, which was designed to calm and resolve the country’s most important problems, had become a headache and was likely to get worse.
The MAS Secretary General assured that the political organization supports peaceful and democratic approaches to conflict resolution and supports the urgent need to achieve civil peace through dialogue and negotiation.
Mujica welcomed the decision of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the inauguration of President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic, which was attended by representatives of many countries friendly to Venezuela. He also praised the help provided by Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and other countries in the search for a peaceful solution to the political conflict in Venezuela.
“We reject and regret that the government disqualifies itself every time it makes a statement of this nature,” he concluded.
