Under the leadership of the President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, the “Tsimbina” social protection program was launched yesterday at the Mahamasina Indoor Sports Arena. This ambitious program aims to support economically vulnerable families by providing them with solutions to combat rapid inflation and allowing them to finance their children’s education.
“Tsimbina”, which means “support” in Malagasy, is part of the government’s response to the current economic crisis. By providing two monetary transfers and targeted support measures, the program also positions itself as a key vehicle for human capital development, the first cornerstone of overall national policy.
Initially intended to cover 657,000 families, the program was expanded to 821,250 beneficiaries in 120 districts across 23 regions of the country. This growth demonstrates President Rajoelina’s ability to mobilize resources, driven by fruitful negotiations with the World Bank, thus demonstrating his new confidence in the leadership of the Madagascar Head of State.
The beneficiaries are evenly distributed, with 53% living in urban areas and 47% in rural areas. The major cities of Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Toamasina, Fianarantsoa, Antsirabe and Toliara are the priority areas, and in Antananarivo, 150,000 households will benefit from this initiative.
In order to benefit from the program, families must meet strict criteria set by the Social Security Commission (CPS). Each application goes through a community screening and verification process to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most. Please note that families who already benefit from other social programs cannot apply for TSIMBINA.
The beneficiaries will receive a total of Ariary 200,000, distributed in two installments of Ariary 100,000 each through mobile money (Airtel Money or Orange Money). In addition to the cash transfer, awareness sessions will be organized to build the resilience of families. These sessions will cover various topics, from raising children to good nutrition, while promoting beneficial financial practices.
