Trump sentencing in porn actress payment case delayed due to U.S. Supreme Court immunity ruling

Central Asia (CA) – A New York judge has delayed Donald Trump’s sentencing on charges of faking payments to porn stars until September after the former president’s lawyers sought to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s conviction. Partial immunitywrote “British Broadcasting Corporation”.

Trump was originally scheduled to be sentenced on July 11.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that former presidents are immune from prosecution for “official” acts performed while in office.

Judge Juan Melchand, who is presiding over the trial in New York, announced that he will rule on the prosecution and defense motions on September 6. If the judge finds that the Supreme Court’s ruling does not require an overturn, sentencing will take place on September 18.

On May 30, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying records to conceal payments to former porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Trump becomes the first former president to be convicted of a criminal offense.

He was charged with 34 counts in total, and the jury found him guilty on all counts.

In making its ruling, the Supreme Court noted that it would be up to lower courts to decide what constitutes “official” presidential activities and what does not.

As the newspaper wrote, this opened up a wide range of room for interpretation, and Trump’s lawyers tried the next day to use the federal court’s ruling to overturn the decision of a New York state court that is not directly affiliated with him.

Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen paid porn actress Stormy Daniels for silence. Cohen was subsequently reimbursed for those payments as a fee for his services. The payments took place while Trump was president, and prosecutors argue that he signed the checks directly from the White House. Trump’s defenders are now trying to portray these actions as “official.”

Prosecutors called the defense’s arguments weak but also suggested that sentencing be postponed until July 24 to prepare a more detailed response.
