The spectator killed in a shooting at a Pennsylvania rally targeting Donald Trump has been identified as Cory Completore, a 50-year-old firefighter and father of two.

“We lost a fellow Pennsylvanian last night, Cory Comperatore,” the state’s governor, Josh Shapiro, told reporters. “I just spoke by phone with his wife and two daughters.”

He said the victim was a church-going firefighter and an ardent Trump supporter who “loved his community and especially his family.”

Shapiro called Saturday’s shooting, which injured two other spectators, “appalling for the state and the nation.”

The other victims have not yet been identified, but NPR WESA cited Pittsburgh hospital officials as saying both victims were locals and were in critical condition.

The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who lived in nearby Bethel Park, was killed by a Secret Service sniper.

One of Competaretore’s daughters, Alison, described her father in a Facebook post as “the best dad girls could ask for” who was always willing to help and quick to “make friends with anyone.”

“What the media doesn’t tell you is that he died a real-life superhero,” she said.

“He threw me and my mom to the ground … (and) used my body to block the bullets that were fired at us.”

Shapiro also called Comperatore “a hero” who died protecting his family, and said state flags would be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.

“Corey is an avid supporter of the former president,” Shapiro added, “and he was very happy to be here last night.”

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for the Comperatore family had received nearly $330,000 in donations as of 3 p.m.
