Trump rally shooting investigation continues, new details emerge about assassination attempt

The National Security Council said it had been tracking Iranian threats against the former president for years but had not found any links to foreign powers in Saturday’s shooting.

In response to this intelligence, the Secret Service said they continue to receive new information about potential threats, but will not comment on specific threats.

“The Secret Service and other agencies are continually receiving new information about potential threats and are taking action to adjust resources as needed,” Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s communications director, said Tuesday.

After learning of the heightened threat from Iran, the National Security Council reached out directly to top Secret Service officials to ensure the agency continued to track the latest reports, one official said. The Secret Service shared the information with Trump’s security detail, and the Trump campaign was aware of the evolving threat.

In response, the Secret Service had increased resources and assets for Trump’s protection by Saturday, the official said.

“These threats stem from Iran’s desire to seek retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson.

“We consider this to be a top national and homeland security priority,” Watson said. “At this time, law enforcement is reporting that their investigation has not uncovered any links between the shooter and any co-conspirators or accomplices, domestic or foreign.”

A spokesman for the Trump campaign declined to comment on the former president’s security detail.
